Keep in mind that when units began being repainted no exact dates can be determined except the starting dates.
Some units remained in the older paint scheme for some time before being repainted whereas some were repainted right away. As always, when custom painting a model, refer to good pictures of the unit for placement of roadname, road numbers, heralds and other lettering details. Pictures also reveal minor variations in these paint schemes due to being done in different repair shops. Pictures also reveal minor variations in the placement of horns, bells, lights and other appliances.

  • 1939 Scheme-Green/metallic aluminum

    Basic Body and handrails painted Sylvan Green. Frame, trucks, and pilot painted black. Metallic aluminum was applied from top of front windows over the top. This dropped down at the engine intake grilles to line up with top of windows on the trailer units. Another band of Imitation aluminum was applied at bottom of body which lined up with bottom of windows on the trailer units. This band narrowed upwards at a point below the engine intake grilles and continued around front terminating in a downward "vee" curve with the "SR Southern Serves the South" round medallion in the center. Roadname, centered between the baggage doors and on the upper
    Metallic Aluminum was S O U T H E R N in railroad roman lettering. The name of the motorcar applied below the engine intake grilles was was VULCAN in railroad roman lettering. Road numbers were applied below the front windows for example, 40. The lighted number boards were white with black numerals. All the Motorcars were delivered in this scheme. There were 6 of these units named Goldenrod, Joe Wheeler, 2 were named Cracker and 2 were named Vulcan.
