The frequency generated by an AC generator is a function of the number of poles
in the generator and the speed at which it is rotated.

poles speed in rpm frequency   poles speed in rpm frequency   poles speed in rpm frequency
2 3600 60 cycles   2 3000 50 cycles   2 1500 25 cycles
4 1800 60 cycles   4 1500 50 cycles   4 750 25 cycles
6 1200 60 cycles   6 1000 50 cycles   6 500 25 cycles
8 900 60 cycles   8 750 50 cycles   8 375 25 cycles
40 180 60 cycles   40 150 50 cycles   40 75 25 cycles
As you can see from the chart almost any frequency can be generated simply by varying the speed of the generator. The formula f=P x S/120 will give the frequency. f=freq, p= number of poles, S= speed of rotation in rpm. Hope this helps understand why a dedicated generating station can deliver any desired frequency. The USA has used 60 cycles almost exclusively, Canada has/had some 50 cycle power plants. If an AC electric motor is connected to any given frequency it will rotate at a speed in relation to the number of poles it has.
