CENTURY C420 PHASE INFORMATION

C-420's were built between June 1963 and August 1968.

Options were dynamic brakes and several sizes of fuel tanks, steam generators and High noses.

Phase 1-Square boxy carbody with large air intake on rear of long hood. The dynamic brake openings were along top of long hood. Handrails mounted on walkways with handholes for access. Short hood is longer than other centuries.

Phase 2-Same as Phase 1 except handrails were mounted directly on side of the frame.

CENTURY C-424 PHASE INFORMATION

C-424's were built between April 1963 and May 1967.

Options were dynamic brakes, several sizes of fuel tanks. Steam generators and hi-hoods were not offered.

Phase 1-Had an overhang at rear for the numberboards and the classification lights. Two horizontal slots for the engine inertial air intake filters. Battery boxes on walkways ahead and behind cab. Atlas offers a Phase 1 body.

Phase 2-Overhang at rear for the numberboards and the classification lights was eliminated. Numberboards were in an notch at top. Class lights were moved down on the rear just below the notch. Cab angled across entire front. Single vertical rectangular inertial inlet slot for the engine inertial air intake filters. Battery boxes on walkways ahead and behind cab.
Atlas offers a Phase 2 body.

Phase 3-As Phase 2 except the battery boxes were moved from the cab area to just below the rear walkways. Most of the Phase 3's were built by Montreal Locomotive Works(MLW).
No phase 3 body was offered, this must be kitbashed.

CENTURY C-425 PHASE INFORMATION

C-425's were built between October 1964 and December 1966.

Options were dynamic brakes, several sizes of fuel tanks and Hi-Hoods. Steam generators were not offered.

Phase 1-A 4" wider area below the radiator intake ducts is the major difference between the Phase 2 C-424 and the Phase 1 C-425. Numberboards were in an notch at top. Class lights were on the rear just below the notch. Cab angled across entire front. Single vertical rectangular inertial inlet slot for the engine inertial air intake filters.
Atlas offers a Phase 1 body.

Phase 2-As Phase 1 except the battery boxes were moved from the cab area to just below the rear walkways.

CENTURY C-628 PHASE INFORMATION

C-628's were built between December 1963 and January 1968.

Options were dynamic brakes, several sizes of fuel tanks. and high noses. Steam generators were not offered.

Phase 1-Has a small rain shield over the main air intake system. Cab is angled across entire width same as C424-425's.

Phase 2-Same as Pahse 1 except no rain shield. Engine room doors below exhaust stack are shorter than the rest.

Phase 3-Same as Phase 2 except all doors are full height.

Phase 4-Same as Phase 3 except built for Mexican roads only. Cab is angled in center portion only same as C420's.

CENTURY C-630 PHASE INFORMATION

C-630's were built between July 1965 and October 1967.
Production continued in Canada till July 1969.

Options were dynamic brakes, several sizes of fuel tanks, High noses and a choice of trucks. Steam generators were not offered.
N&W #1135-1139 had trade-in trucks from their FM Trainmasters.

Phase 1-All had cabs with the angled center section only. Hi-Ad and Tri-Mount trucks were used by several roads. The CN&W had Hi-Hood units with Tri-Mount trucks. The N&W had Hi-Hood units with trade-in trucks from F-M Trainmasters. The C-630 used an AC main generator and drive so Alco chose to use an air start motor.

CENTURY C-636 PHASE INFORMATION

C-636's were built between December 1967 and November 1968.
Production continued in Canada and Australia.

Phase 1-Only one body style and all had Hi-Ads trucks. The C-636 used an AC main generator and drive so Alco chose to use an air start motor.

Notes for ALCO trucks

Blunt trucks have a wheelbase of 8'-00".

AAR "A" Trucks have a wheelbase of 8'-00"

AAR "B" Trucks have a wheelbase of 9'-04" with GE traction motors.

AAR "B" trucks have a wheelbase of 9'-10" with Westinghouse traction motors.

HI-AD Switcher trucks have the same wheelbases as the AAR "B" depending on the traction motors.

A-1-A Trucks for the RSC-3 & RSC-24 have equal spaced axles of 5'-03" for a total of 10'-06". sideframes are similar to short end of tri-mounts.

A-1-A trucks for RSC-2 have equal spaced axles of 5'-03" for a total of 10'-06" Trucks are special cast units for branchline service

TRI-MOUNTS used on Alco 3 axle Freight units have axles spaced at 5'-07" and 6'-11" for a total of 12'-06".

A-1-A units used on Alco Passenger units have equal spaced axles of 7'-09" for a total of 15'-06".

HI-AD 3 axle trucks have unequal spaced axles of 6'-07 3/8" and 6'-11 5/8" for a total of 13'-07".

C-630's equipped with FM "Trainmaster " trucks have unequal spaced axles of 5'-05" and 7'-03" for a total of 12'-08".

MLW type "B" have a whb of 8'-10"

MLW "Flex" 3 axle have a whb of 11'-02"
