AAR DESIGNATIONS for MOTOR CARS-1956

EA Electric Street Railway Service Car, direct current for transportation of passengers, withoput automatic couplings.
EB Electric baggage car for long hauls or Suburban service Multiple unit with automatic couplers, air brakes and suitable for transportation of baggage. Third rail, trolley or pantagraph contact.
EC Electric Combination. For long hauls or Suburban service. Multiple unit with automatic couplers and air brakes. Car has two compartments, separated by bulkhead, one for passengers and one for baggage Third rail, trolley or pantagraph contact.
ED Rail Motor Car. Propelled by an internal combustion engine either directly or thru a generator to axle motors. With or without baggage or mail compartment or both.
EG Gasoline propelled motor car for inspection, private use or in Suburban service, hauling one or more trailers.
EM Electric mail car. for use in US mail service with side doors, with or without a mail hook and suitable apparatus for sorting mail en route. With or without end doors and windows.
EP Electric Passenger car. For long hauls or Suburban service. Multiple unit, fitted with automatic couplings and air brakes Third rail, trolley or pantagraph contact.
ES Electric Passenger car. For long hauls or Suburban service. Multiple unit, fitted with automatic couplings and air brakes Operating power-Storage Batteries.
ET Passenger Trailer. Non-powered unit fitted with automatic couplers, air brakes for use in multiple unit service in combination with electric powered cars.
